Power Management — one integrated system

A Power Management System (PMS) for marine, offshore and island installations coordinates multiple generators, the bus-tie network and the connected loads. It is not a single function but a coordinated set: synchronisation and parallel operation, load sharing, automatic load shedding on source loss, bus-tie logic, blackout prevention and diesel genset control through speed and AVR signals.

SYMAP® BCG and ECG are the classic platforms for full multi-generator PMS. Compact+ GC covers the simpler case of a single generation unit connecting to the grid (Grid Code, EZA/EZE). For the multi-generator case with parallel operation, load sharing and diesel control, classic BCG / ECG remains the choice.

PMS architecture

Typical PMS functions

Synchronisation (25 / 25A)

Automatic synchronisation of generator to busbar or grid. Check-sync supervision (25), auto-sync controller (25A) with speed and AVR commands.

Load sharing

Active and reactive power sharing between generators in parallel operation. Isochronous and droop modes, target setpoint per generator.

Automatic load shedding

Fast load shedding on source loss to prevent blackout. Priority-based shedding of non-critical consumers, with restoration logic once the system stabilises.

Bus-tie logic

Coordinated bus-tie operation with synchronisation, fault separation and restoration. Critical for DP-class redundant power architectures.

Diesel genset control

Speed and AVR commands to the diesel governor and excitation regulator. Start/stop sequences, warm-up, cool-down, common alarm and trip handling.

Blackout recovery

Sequential restart of generators after blackout, prioritised reconnection of critical and non-critical loads, end-to-end logged blackout sequence for post-event analysis.

Compact+ or classic SYMAP®?

Compact+ GC is a Protection & Control IED for a single generation unit connecting to the grid, EZA/EZE, Grid Code, NA protection, sync-check. For multi-generator Power Management (parallel operation, load sharing, automatic load shedding, bus-tie logic, diesel genset control), classic SYMAP® Y-G for stand-alone or SYMAP® BCG / ECG for full PMS remains the choice.
