Protection devices for LV and MV switchgear cells
For LV and MV switchgear cells, SYMAP® solutions cover protection, control, metering, interlocking, signalling, communication and diagnostics of individual cells and wider system architectures. Typical functions include protection of feeder, connection, transformer and motor cells, breaker and disconnector control, trip/close circuit supervision, breaker failure logic, communication with the SCADA system and event/fault recording.
IEC 61850 / GOOSE, IEC 60870-5-104, Modbus TCP, PRP/HSR/RSTP redundancy and additional communication interfaces are available according to the selected communication option and Order Code. For applications requiring fast signal exchange between cells, SYMAP® Compact+ supports high-speed GOOSE communication and redundant Ethernet topologies.
SYMAP® ARC provides arc-flash detection and fast tripping in switchgear cells. Reaction time and total extinguishing time depend on the specific ARC configuration, the breaker and any arc-quenching system used.
SYMAP® Compact+ is considered as a compact Protection & Control IED for individual cells, particularly when protection, switchgear control, metering, interlocking, HMI, communication and local logic are required in a single device. The classic SYMAP® series is considered for more complex installations, larger signal counts, retrofit projects, existing SYMAP® / HIMAP architectures, or where dedicated application variants are required.
Note: Compact+ F1/F2/F3/F4 should not be interpreted as direct equivalents of the classic SYMAP® F/M/T/G variants. The Compact+ variant is selected according to measurement inputs, CT/VT configuration, I/O, communication and Order Code options. The classic SYMAP® series is selected according to the application and system architecture.
Which SYMAP® for this application?
For individual LV/MV switchgear cells, SYMAP® Compact+ is most often considered, because it combines protection, control, metering, interlocking, HMI, signalling and communication in a single IED. Compact+ F1/F2/F3/F4 variants are selected according to CT/VT measurements, earth-fault regime, number of voltage systems, I/O signals, communication and Order Code options. The classic SYMAP® series is considered for more complex switchgear/substation architectures, larger signal counts, retrofit projects, or where dedicated variants such as F, T, M, LD, DC or ARC are required. SYMAP® D is not listed as a general switchgear function, but only where a specific scheme includes a connection line or zone in which distance protection 21 is required.
