Battery / energy storage systems

Power management for static and dynamic energy sources

Protection and control for battery and energy storage systems

For BESS and other energy storage systems, SYMAP® solutions cover the protection, metering, control and communication layer for land-based and marine battery applications. For land-based BESS plants, the focus is on the AC side of the connection, PCC metering, PCS/inverter transformers, MV busbars, feeder cells, Grid Code functions and communication with SCADA, EMS or PPC systems.

For the AC grid connection of a BESS plant, SYMAP® Compact+ GC is considered for network and system protection, NA functions, grid decoupling, voltage and frequency monitoring and communication on the AC interface. For additional feeder, transformer and auxiliary cells, the corresponding Compact+ or classic SYMAP® variants are considered according to the measurement inputs and cell functions. SYMAP® Compact+ is FGH-certified per VDE-AR-N 4110:2018-11 (medium voltage) and VDE-AR-N 4120:2018-11 (high voltage).

For marine and offshore hybrid BESS applications, SYMAP® BAT and the corresponding SYMAP® marine variants are considered for integration of the battery converter with generator groups, the busbar, the transformer and the supervisory system. The corresponding SYMAP® marine variants are available with type approvals from the leading classification societies according to the selected configuration and application.

On the DC and battery side, the SYMAP® BAT and DC variants together with the corresponding communication interfaces can provide a signal, protection-and-control and communication layer to the BMS/PCS system. SYMAP® is not a replacement for the BMS; it works as part of the overall electrical and control architecture of the plant.

Recommended products

SYMAP® Compact+ — AC side and individual cells
Classic SYMAP® series and additional systems

Note: Compact+ F1/F2/F3/F4 should not be interpreted as direct equivalents of the classic SYMAP® F/M/T/G variants. The Compact+ variant is selected according to measurement inputs, CT/VT configuration, I/O, communication and Order Code options. The classic SYMAP® series is selected according to the application and system architecture.

Which SYMAP® for this application?

For land-based BESS plants the focus is on the AC connection, Grid Code requirements, PCC metering and the interface to the PCS/BMS system. For the AC grid connection of a BESS plant, SYMAP® Compact+ GC is most often considered as the protection, metering and communication layer on the PCC and AC interface. For additional MV feeder, transformer and auxiliary cells, the corresponding Compact+ F1/F2/F3/F4 or classic SYMAP® F/T/LD/DC variants are selected according to the cell function and measurement inputs. For marine and offshore hybrid BESS applications, SYMAP® BAT is considered as a dedicated Power Management, protection and control solution for battery converters and generator systems, with marine type approval available according to the selected configuration. SYMAP® is not a BMS replacement; it is part of the overall electrical and communication architecture.
