Protection for emergency power and backup systems

Protection and control for data centre power infrastructure

For data centres, SYMAP® solutions cover protection, control, metering, interlocking, communication and diagnostics of the internal power infrastructure: generator systems, MV and LV switchgear, transformer and feeder cells, section cells, UPS/ATS architecture, auxiliary supplies and critical load branches. SYMAP® products are installed in approximately 1,000 emergency power and energy backup systems worldwide, including data centres, hospitals, shopping centres, airports, stadiums and governmental buildings. SYMAP® Compact+ has DNV Cyber Secure Essential Type Approval per IEC 62443-3-3 security level 1.

SYMAP® Compact+ is considered for individual cells when protection, switchgear control, signalling, metering, local logic and communication are required in a single IED. For multiple generator sets, bus-tie logic, automatic load shedding, load prioritization and more complex backup operating modes, the corresponding SYMAP® variants are considered for Power Management and system coordination.

Note: the focus of this application is the internal power architecture of the data centre, within the facility or campus. SYMAP® is not offered as a solution for external HV connection lines or utility feeds to the site.

SYMAP® Compact+ — individual cells in the data centre
Classic SYMAP® series and additional systems

Note: Compact+ F1/F2/F3/F4 should not be interpreted as direct equivalents of the classic SYMAP® F/M/T/G variants. The Compact+ variant is selected according to measurement inputs, CT/VT configuration, I/O, communication and Order Code options. The classic SYMAP® series is selected according to the application and system architecture.

Which SYMAP® for this application?

For data centres, SYMAP® solutions are not limited to backup generators; they cover the internal power infrastructure of the facility: generator cells, MV/LV switchgear, bus-tie logic, ATS/UPS architecture, transformer and feeder cells, auxiliary supplies and critical load branches. For individual cells, SYMAP® Compact+ is most often considered, while for multiple generator units, Power Management, load sharing, load shedding and more complex system coordination, the corresponding SYMAP® G / ECG / BCG variants are considered. The focus of this application is within the data centre or campus, not the external HV utility feed to the site.

Reliability and communication

Communication and monitoring features depend on the selected configuration and Order Code.

  • When the IEC 61850 / GOOSE communication option is selected: high-speed GOOSE transfer times in the range of approximately 0.7–1.5 ms under normal conditions
  • Network redundancy: RSTP, HSR, PRP per IEC 62439-3, including PRP/HSR modes with the zero-packet-loss redundancy principle
  • Hot Standby dual-homing supported
  • DNV Cyber Secure Essential per IEC 62443-3-3 Security Level 1
  • Multi-processor architecture with self-diagnostics: four internally monitored functional processor units (CU, MU, GU, ComU), with additional supervision of the EBS extension when applied
