Battery-hybrid vessels, electric tugs, hybrid offshore vessels — combinations of batteries and diesel gensets
SYMAP® BAT is a protection, control and Power Management solution for hybrid systems and battery converter applications. It is used to integrate battery energy storage into the electrical system of a vessel or installation, particularly where the battery converter must be coordinated with generator groups, the busbar, the main breaker, the transformer and the supervisory system. It is built on the same hardware as SYMAP® ECG (marine LV) with alternative firmware for battery converter integration, making it suitable for marine hybrid applications: battery-hybrid ferries, electric harbour tugs, hybrid offshore support vessels, and other vessels that combine a battery bank with diesel or gas gensets to reduce emissions in line with IMO regulations.
In hybrid marine systems, SYMAP® BAT provides LV and MV protection of battery converter outputs, transformer differential protection, synchronization of the battery converter to the busbar, main breaker control, load sharing between generators and battery converters, controlled supply for battery charging, and a stand-by diesel start demand on low battery level. In hybrid DP architectures SYMAP® acts as the PMS, protection and control layer, coordinating with the DP/IAS system, generator groups, battery converters and busbar sections. Communication with the SCADA system is realized over Modbus RTU or Modbus TCP, with CANBUS communication between SYMAP® devices and discrete signals to the battery converter.
SYMAP® BAT does not replace the BMS. The BMS remains responsible for battery cells, modules, safety and internal battery logic, while SYMAP® BAT provides the protection, control, Power Management and communication layer for integration of the battery converter into the electrical system.
Note: SYMAP® BAT is the main IED for hybrid marine applications and battery converter integration. Other SYMAP® variants are considered according to the device function in the system (generator, transformer, feeder, DC, retrofit). Compact+ is not listed here as the primary solution; hybrid marine architectures use the classic SYMAP® application variants.
Which SYMAP® for this application?
For hybrid marine systems with a battery converter, SYMAP® BAT is considered as the Power Management, protection and control layer between generator groups, the battery converter, the step-up transformer, the busbar and the SCADA system. Functions include LV and MV protection of battery converter outputs, transformer differential protection, synchronization to the busbar, main breaker control, load sharing with generators, controlled charging and a stand-by diesel start demand on low battery level. For a full marine Power Management System with load sharing, automatic load shedding, bus-tie logic and diesel genset control, the classic SYMAP® BCG and ECG variants apply. SYMAP® BAT is not a replacement for the BMS; it is the system-level layer for integrating the battery converter into the electrical system.
