Connect to the grid, on day one

Building a wind farm, solar park, biogas plant or battery storage system involves dozens of moving parts — civil works, transformers, inverters, SCADA, communication. The one item that often blocks the grid connection at the last minute is the protection relay: if it does not carry the right grid-code certification, the DSO or TSO will not energise your connection, and your project sits idle while you scramble for a compliant alternative.

SYMAP® Compact+ GC eliminates that risk. It carries the full set of grid-code type approvals required across Germany, the UK, and most of the EU — signed and stamped by accredited test houses. Engineers can specify it knowing the grid connection will pass.

Which type of renewable energy plant?

Renewable energy sources require different protection and control configurations — from a single generation unit to large plant controllers. Pick your segment — each page describes the Grid Code requirements, the EZA/EZE distinction and the recommended SYMAP® configuration.

Solar and wind plants

Utility-scale PV, commercial solar, onshore and offshore wind parks

Typical requirement: Grid Code compliance per VDE-AR-N 4110/4120 (Germany and region) or UK G99, NA protection at the connection point, EZA/EZE controller (Erzeugungsanlagen-Regler), Q/P control, FRT (fault ride-through), automatic synchronization with the grid.

Recommended products:
SYMAP® Compact+ GC — one device for NA protection and EZA controller
FGH certificate — certified and ready for grid connection
Plant controller (PPC) for parks with multiple inverters — central management of power and reactive setpoints

Hydropower plants

Small and medium hydro, run-of-river, pumped storage

Typical requirement: Generator protection (87G, 32, 40, 46, 49, 50/51, 81), automatic synchronization with the grid (25A), parallel operation and island mode, Grid Code documentation for the DSO operator, FGH certificate for connection.

Recommended products:
SYMAP® Y-G — generator protection for a single unit
SYMAP® Compact+ GC — for grid connection with Grid Code logic
SYMAP® BCG / ECG — for hydropower with multiple generators in parallel operation

Biogas and cogeneration (CHP)

Biogas plants, gas engines, landfill gas, CHP units

Typical requirement: Gas generator in CHP mode (electrical and thermal energy in parallel), NA protection per VDE-AR-N 4110, parallel-with-grid and island operation, synchronization (25A), gas engine protection against overload and misfiring.

Recommended products:
SYMAP® Compact+ GC — one device for NA protection, EZA controller and synchronization
SYMAP® BCG / ECG — for CHP with multiple gas gensets

BESS — battery energy storage

Grid-connected battery systems, peak shaving, frequency regulation

Typical requirement: AC grid connection of the battery installation with a PCS transformer, NA protection per VDE-AR-N 4110/4120, IEC 62933 standard series for BESS. DC side with monitoring functions (current, voltage, insulation, string balancing). SYMAP® provides a signal interface to the BMS — it is not a BMS replacement, nor a PCS controller.

Recommended products:
SYMAP® Compact+ GC — AC side, NA protection, EZA controller
SYMAP® Y-BAT — DC monitoring and BMS interface

Hybrid installations and microgrids

PV + battery + diesel, wind + battery + grid, microgrids for remote installations

Typical requirement: Coordinated management across multiple sources (PV, wind, diesel, battery), seamless transition from grid-connected to island mode, grid-forming inverter logic, optimisation by source priority. Compact+ GC as field IED, plant controller as the central logic.

Recommended products: Compact+ GC for individual connection points, BCG/ECG for systems with multiple diesel gensets, Y-BAT for DC battery monitoring, an external plant controller for optimisation.

Distinction: EZA controller vs Plant Controller (PPC)

EZA controller (Erzeugungsanlagen-Regler) is part of every individual generation unit per Grid Code requirements — it sits inside SYMAP® Compact+ GC and communicates with the local inverter or generator. It implements Q/P control, frequency regulation, and FRT response to the DSO command.

Plant Controller (PPC) is the central logic of the whole plant with multiple inverters or generators — it coordinates the setpoints of the individual EZA controllers, dispatch logic per operator signal, and overall park optimisation. PPC is a separate system that integrates with the SYMAP® network over IEC 61850 or Modbus.
