Built for the sea since 1968

For more than half a century, stuckeGROUP has been delivering protection and control systems for ocean-going vessels and offshore platforms. From cargo ships and ferries to drillships, FPSO units, dive support vessels, and offshore wind installation vessels — our SYMAP® family of digital relays is in service across all major fleets and operators.

What makes a marine protection relay different from a land-based one is not the algorithms — it is the environment: salt mist, vibration, EMI from large drives, ambient temperatures from -25 °C in arctic operations to +70 °C in engine rooms, the requirement for galvanic isolation, the strict redundancy obligations of class societies, and the simple fact that service can be days away by sea. Every SYMAP® device is engineered to that operating envelope.

Through the stuckeGROUP service network — Hamburg HQ plus offices in Belgrade, Seoul, Shanghai, and Mumbai, coordinated 24/7 from Hamburg — we are a phone call away from any port in the world.

Type approvals

Approved by every major classification society

Our SYMAP® devices carry type approvals from the classification societies whose certificates your customers and insurers require. Without these, no shipyard order; with all of them, one device covers any vessel.

Mandatory since 2024

Cyber security — type-approved per IACS UR E27

Since 1 July 2024, all new ship contracts under IACS rules must demonstrate cyber resilience for their on-board systems — including protection relays. SYMAP® is type-approved per IACS UR E27 (Rev. 1) by major classification societies including BV, DNV, and LR.

For a shipyard, this means SYMAP® is ready to drop in — no extra cyber-hardening engineering, no waiting for vendor certification, no scrambling to find an approved alternative weeks before delivery.

Which segment are you in?

Marine and offshore industry covers different project types with different priorities. Pick your segment — each page describes the typical challenge, recommended SYMAP® configuration and class society approvals.

Marine switchboards

Container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, LNG, chemical tankers, general cargo

Typical requirement: Main and auxiliary switchboard protection, parallel operation of multiple diesel gensets, load sharing, automatic load shedding on source loss, class society approvals from LR/ABS/DNV/BV/CCS/PRS/NK/RINA/KR.

Recommended products:
SYMAP® BCG / ECG — generator protection + PMS
SYMAP® ARC — MV switchgear arc protection
SYMAP® R — HIMAP retrofit during docking

Offshore platforms, FPSOs and rig systems

Fixed platforms, FPSO/FSO, jack-ups, semi-submersibles, drilling rigs

Typical requirement: High availability in harsh environments, redundant power, bus-tie logic, zoning, class approvals for explosion zones, service in short docking windows.

Recommended products:
SYMAP® BCG / ECG — PMS and generator protection
SYMAP® ARC — arc zone protection for MV switchgear
SYMAP® R — HIMAP obsolescence management

More on offshore systems →

Dynamic Positioning (DP)

Drillships, AHTS, PSV, cable layers, dive support, accommodation vessels

Typical requirement: Compliance with DP-1, DP-2, DP-3 notations, redundant PMS architecture with physical separation, fast-acting protection, source-loss handling without loss of position.

Recommended products:
SYMAP® BCG / ECG — redundant PMS with zoning
SYMAP® ARC — fast arc-flash protection for critical bays

More on DP systems →

RoRo, passenger and naval vessels

Cruise liners, ferries, ROPAX, RoRo, megayachts, patrol craft, coast guard

Typical requirement: High availability for hotel loads, redundant power for life-safety systems, shore-to-ship power management, IACS UR E27 cyber security, shock resistance (MIL standards).

Recommended products:
SYMAP® BCG / ECG — redundant PMS
SYMAP® ARC — MV switchgear protection

More on passenger vessels →

Hybrid vessels and alternative propulsion

Diesel-electric, diesel + battery hybrid, dual-fuel, battery propulsion, SOV, CTV for offshore wind

Typical requirement: Integration of diesel gensets with battery systems through AC/DC converters, peak shaving, spinning reserve reduction, class rules for battery systems. SYMAP® provides a signal and communication interface to the BMS, but is not a BMS replacement.

Recommended products: SYMAP® BCG/ECG for PMS with hybrid sources, SYMAP® Y-BAT for DC battery monitoring side.

Special vessels and non-standard applications

SYMAP® solutions deployed on special vessels that do not fit standard categories.

From new build to retrofit — full lifecycle

We support marine projects from initial design discussions all the way to fleet-wide retrofit programs and end-of-life replacements:

  • New-build protection coordination, FAT/SAT, sea-trial support
  • Class re-certification of MV switchboards (every 5 years)
  • Retrofit programs for HIMAP, SYNPOL, DICON installed base
  • Cyber security upgrades for legacy fleets
  • 24/7 emergency support — Hamburg/Belgrade/Seoul/Shanghai/Mumbai
  • Spare parts available for all device generations since 1968

New build, retrofit, or class renewal?

Send us your single-line diagram and class society target. Our marine engineers in Belgrade and Hamburg will return a protection concept, parts list, and project schedule — usually within one working week.
